Species text
The weevil Lixus scabricollis was discovered new to Britain in 1987 at a site in West Kent. It was first found in Essex at Old Hall Marshes in 2000 by Nigel Cuming (Cuming & Bowdrey 2001) and P.R. Harvey has found it at several sites in S. Essex including Aveley in South Essex in 2000 (Harvey 2000). It is probably a recent colonist or possibly an accidental introduction (Hyman & Parsons 1992). It is found on sea beet Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima growing on coastal shingle, but on the Continent, this species is associated with a variety of Beta species. Disturbance of coastal shingle should be avoided. References
